Hello All,
We are all doing really well. I wish I could tell you we were eating fly covered gruel, but the food is actually great. For dinner tonight they had a whole roasted pig. Here's a quote from Kevin, "At dinner I saw a pig get dissected and put on my plate!"
Last night Myself, Kevin, and Alex had a long conversation with the Security Guard here who speaks no English. It was mostly me conversing and the guy must've felt like he was talking to a child, but I am proud to say that I'm pretty sure I successfully used the future tense at one point. He came over because Kevin had a Bible. We started talking about him being a Christian and then of course baseball and fishing. He mentioned he doesn't have a Spanish Bible, so I am getting one from Mike Williams today to give to him. It's cool but I also got the sense that he was trying to get as much as he could from us. He also mentioned he needed a fishing pole. I recommended trying his hands.
Jean Detellis spoke to us this morning after breakfast. She and her husband founded New Missions. She shared some stories of how God has worked here and through them, and encouraged us to listen to The Holy Spirit's guidance this week.
We attended the English Speaking Church and it was a great experience. It was a very diverse congregation with local people, people from England, Haiti, and many other places. The worship team didn't have the greatest technology, but plugged through and by the 2nd song the unison of the voices singing of God's greatness was really a beautiful thing. The Pastor (my friend Mike) shared about God's love and the fact that he has a plan for you no matter who you are. Mike was a comedian full time before moving down here to minister about a year ago, so needless to say he was humorous, honest, and very relatable.
This afternoon we had VBS training. We were split into groups and will be visiting different churches this week. Some of us learned a dance that we will be teaching students tomorrow. Some of us will be leading Bible Stories, athletics, and crafts. Actually, Pastor will be leading a group of 6 year olds from station to station.
Tonight we had a devotional time where we discussed representing Christ to these kids and allowing Him to do something in their lives that they will remember forever. They will always remember that God loves them enough to send some people from Philadelphia to show them His love.
Tonight I was able to ride through town and into a rural area to visit my friend Mike's 2 bedroom apartment where he his wife and 4 kids live. You read that right. As we went through the city he explained to me and I saw the large problem they have with prostitution, drugs, and alcohol. It is a very rough and dark situation. It was encouraging though, that when we stopped for gas the attendant recognized Mike was a Pastor and encouraged him to keep it up for God. Pray for New Missions and their missionaries as they are reaching out to a dark world.
